David Bowie: A Space Oddity
David Bowie made a video with the first rendition of this song (you can find it on YouTube), but it was not with the single version released in the U.S., which I strongly prefer. Bowie has leaned heavily toward danceable, groove-based music for a long time…most of which I didn’t care for. But this is a tender, somber song…similar to the loneliness Elton John brought to Rocket Man…but sadder. And Bowie is at his androgynous-Ziggy-Stardust best here. The video apparently has zero budget, so they just shoot him and show you the recording console in the studio and shots of an ocilloscope over and over. It’s good to hear this rendition of the song 30+ years after the fact, however.
