The manner in which the body is turned, twisted, stretched, and balanced on the Mallakhamb keeps the spectators spellbound. The pole stands 225 cm above ground level and it narrows on the tip. The base circumference is 55 cm whereas the top is only 30 cm. Apparently simple ‘khamb’ does not reveal the complexities of the exercises, which require the performer to turn, twist, stretch and balance on the pole. It is this consummate grace, this agility, dexterity, and suppleness of body, combined with quick reflexes, muscle coordination and sense of timing, that single out this game as special.

A kid as young as 8-9 months old plays with the deadly snake. An amazing site, as how fearlessly this toddler was playing/fighting/facing the snake. What’s even more surprising is that the snake doesn’t bite the baby, perhaps animal know who their real enemy are and who are harmless. It’s true that we are born fearless and brought up fearful! As and when we grow we get chained in so many fears and insecurities unknowingly, that we forget that our true nature is to be fearless and courageous.

It depicts a grandstand, where tourists, and visitors can watch the Glacier advancing down the hill, and a glacier icemelt stream from above, flowing through the Glaciers downhill trudge, creating an ice tunnel, which eventually melts and falls into the stream. It happens every four years like clockwork. Those in attendance clearly enjoyed themselves. Pretty amazing!

Her family in China is poor and couldn’t afford prosthetic legs. Instead, she used a basketball to help her move and two wooden props to drag herself. Doctors from China’s Rehabilitation Research Center in Beijing noticed her and committed to get her set up with prosthetics. They finally acheived this goal in May of 2008.

My fall BIOS independent studies student, Raymond Deckel, is investigating just how small a hole Octopus macropus can fit through as well as how long it takes them to squeeze through different sizes of holes. CAABS intern Rowena Day, NSF-REU intern Jared Kibele as well as teaching assistant Abel Valdivia help wrangle the 232 g octopus, Ray times its escape through a 1-inch hole while I shot video clips for later analysis.
